Meet the Maysles

Albert Maysles, who with his brother David made a series of pioneering documentary films starting in the early 1960s, died last week on 5 March. The brothers made nineteen films together, and after David’s death in 1987, Albert went on to create many more.

The Maysles are perhaps best known for Salesman (1969), a startling look at the crass, manipulative techniques of a group of door-to-door bible salesmen; Gimme Shelter (1970), a film of the Rolling Stones’ notorious 1969 Altamont Concert; and Grey Gardens (1976), a moving and sad portrait of two eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis living in squalor in a decrepit Long Island mansion. Such was the impact of Grey Gardens that it went on to be adapted as a Broadway musical in 2006 and as an HBO movie in 2009.

Check out these and other films by the Maysles brothers (and Albert working solo) from Richland Library’s collection. Also, you can use the downloading and streaming source Hoopla to view The Art of Observing Life: Conversations with Documentary Filmmakers, which includes an interview with Albert Maysles.

Amazon Says: Grey Gardens is an American entry into the cinéma verité documentary style film. This one however, is a fascinating look into the lives of the rich and useless. The subjects are related to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis which makes them even more fascinating. Really. The directors of this film are considered pioneers of the documentary film. This one revolves around Mother, daughter and their decaying mansion. The daughter cannot let go of the past, they snipe at each other, reliving the past, and the heartfelt, raw emotions involved in a daughter giving up her hopes and dreams of an acting career to take care of her ailing and aging mother. Poor thing, she only has money and a mansion to soothe the wounds of her unfulfilled dreams. This documentary is worth seeing because it is exceptionally well done. After all, don't we all want to watch the whining, wealthy, elite on screen so we can take a peek into their everyday lives? less...

Amazon Says: The Love We Make , a film directed by Albert Maysles ( Gimme Shelter ) and Bradley Kaplan, follows Paul McCartney as he journeys through the streets of New York City in the aftermath of the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. It also chronicles the planning and performance of the benefit concert that took place less than six months after the attacks: The Concert For New York City . It was an honor to be able to help New York and America at that time in its history, said McCartney of the concert. There was a feeling of shock and fear in the air that I thought we could help alleviate with music and the fact that so many people stepped up to join us made for a very uplifting evening for us all. The film features performance clips from the benefit concert and backstage moments with many of the performers and other famous attendees. less...
