Interlibrary loan services are a great way for you to gain access to books or materials from libraries outside of Richland Library. Please request materials through the Research Department. You can do this at the Research Desk on the second level of Richland Library Main, or by calling 803-929-3400.
A notification will be sent out by phone or email when the items arrive. Materials can be picked up from the hold shelf and checked out at the checkout desk with the library card that was used to place the request. The self-checkout stations cannot be used to check out these materials. To return the materials, please bring the book to the Research Desk or your preferred branch.

Who can request an interlibrary loan?
Any library card holder who is 18 years or older with no blocks that prevent checking out.
What types of materials can I request through interlibrary loan?
The following materials may be borrowed through interlibrary loan:
- Children's books
- Audiovisual educational materials
The following materials may not be borrowed through interlibrary loan:
- Materials owned by Richland Library, unless the only copy is non-circulating or its status is still out or trace
- Periodicals (photocopies of specific articles can be obtained)
- Repair manuals, exam books
- Mass-market paperbacks
- Materials available at moderate cost (paperbacks, pamphlets)
- Recorded books
- Feature films
- Audiovisual equipment
- Computer software
Do you charge a fee for interlibrary loans?
There is no standard fee to request an interlibrary loan. Some libraries do charge to lend their books to us while others do not. When a request is made, please specify the amount you are willing to pay and we look for materials within your price range.
How many interlibrary loan requests can I place?
Up to four requests can be active for one individual at a time.
How long until I receive the materials that I requested?
The wait time for interlibrary loan requests depends on the location and availability. The process can take as little as a few days or as long as a month to receive materials.
Where do I receive my Interlibrary loan items?
Interlibrary loan materials can be picked up from the holds shelf at the Richland Library Main or at the pick up branch you chose. Please check out all items through a check out desk instead of using the self-checkout stations.
For how long will my interlibrary loan check out?
You can keep materials checked out for three weeks. The due date will be visible on your Richland Library online account.
How can I monitor my interlibrary loan books online?
Interlibrary loan materials can be viewed through your Richland Library online account. You can use your account to check on due dates and to keep track of the books you have checked out.
Can I renew my interlibrary loan?
Yes, requests for renewals can be made, but they are not guaranteed as it is up to the lending library. Call 803-929-3400 ahead of the due date to inquire about renewals.
Do you charge fines for overdue interlibrary loans?
No fines will accrue on late interlibrary loan items however, customers are responsible for the replacement cost if items are not returned.
Can I pick up interlibrary loan items from a branch?
Yes, materials can be sent to Richland Library branch locations to be checked out, please specify the pickup location when you place your request
Where do I return my interlibrary loan items?
Please return materials to the second floor Research Desk at the Main library or to your local branch.
